Whitworth Research Project – database management summary 2021.
- Two previously undocumented Confederate Whitworth rifles surfaced in 2020 and were documented – each was complete with scope mounts but missing the telescope. I wonder what else is tucked away in family homes and passed down as heirlooms. . . March 2021
- Pleased to receive pictures of a Whitworth sporting rifle c1859 from a private collection in New Zealand. Noted in 1963 it reappeared in 2005 in the US, then in NZ on 2010, and again in 2021. Documentation details updated. 3 May 2021
- Updated database records for Whitworth military match rifle B94. The cased rifle, with accessories, was presented to a Volunteer Officer attending a course at Hythe School of Musketry in December 1860. 8 May 2021
- Last recorded in 1978, details of Whitworth military match rifle 841 now updated. 17 May 2021
- Whitworth rifle D552 records updated. This was fitted with a Metford Patent barrel by George Gibbs of Bristol in the late 1860s. 29 May 2021
- Database details of the commercial military Whitworth rifle in the Claude Fuller Collection, Chickamauga NPS, updated. This rifle has a 33″ barrel and telescope sight mounts (scope missing). Collection information. 27 June 2021
- Currently reviewing database entries for a collection of 13 Whitworth rifles that were sold in the US c1966. Some have resurfaced since that sale, while others remain to be traced. Anyone know the whereabouts of the following Whitworth rifles – serial number 470, 740 & C931 ? 8 July 2021
- Updated database records for Whitworth rifle no. 85 – ‘three-band’ rifle with 39” barrel of octagonal external form and the characteristic hexagonal 1 in 20 rifling. This rifle was used in trials in 1857. 20 July 2021
- Details of Whitworth sporting rifle no. 770 updated – 30 inch barrel, half stocked rifle with spur trigger guard, presentation plate and nicely engraved. Previously documented in 1994. 30 July 2021
- Always nice when a previously undocumented Whitworth rifle emerges. Newly added to the database is a rifle from 1860, in nearly new condition. It is cased with accessories, including mould, flask, tools and bullets. 3 October 2021
- Two Whitworth rifles first documented in 1963 have resurfaced at Rock Island Auction for December – one the first time since 1963! Good to be able to update database records. 12 November 2021
- Two previously unrecorded Pattern 1863 Enfield-Whitworth rifles added to the database today, and records of an early military match rifle updated. 21 November 2021
- Documentation of a finely engraved 1862 presentation Whitworth rifle updated with photographs. This rifle was first recorded in the database in 2003. 3 December 2021
- Previously undocumented Whitworth rifles still surface from time to time. Military target rifle B226 of 1860 now added to the database and records. 4 December 2021
