Whitworth Research Project – database management summary 2026.
- Primary work on the database through 2026 has focused on data review and formatting to enable extraction of summarised serial number records for a forthcoming book on the firearms of Sir Joseph Whitworth.
- Previous research by the late De Witt Bailey has enabled updates to records, identifying Whitworth rifles that were re-barreled by John Rigby of Ireland during the 19th century.
- Time has been spent reviewing commercial rifle records and compiling information on Whitworth rifles found in New Zealand.
- A 2nd QUALITY commercial rifle (B8**) has been recorded. January 2026.
- Fifteen years after being last recorded, three military target rifles (4**, 6**, 9**) have re-emerged, and records have been updated. February 2026.
- Records for double rifle (D6**) updated. February 2026.
- Military target rifle (F3**) details updated. Previously recorded 26 years earlier. March 2026.
- Pattern 1863 Whitworth Short Rifle (F2**) details updated. May 2026.
- A military target rifle (3**) with lock marked WHITWORTH RIFLE Co MANCHESTER has been added to the database. June 2026.
- Two previously unrecorded prototype sporting rifles have been documented and added to the database. July 2026
- Previously unrecorded military target rifle (B3**) added to the database. August 2026.
- Previously unrecorded Pattern 1863 Whitworth Short Rifle with a barrel by Berger (B4**) was added to the database. August 2026.
