The Conservation of a fine, silver mounted Flintlock Sporting Gun

Conservation

This is a report and record made of the conservation of a fine, silver mounted flintlock sporting gun by Thomas Richards of Birmingham, dated 1748. On agreement with the Museum in the Park, Stroud, the gun was brought to the workshop at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI), Bath, where it was cleaned and conserved by Brian Godwin (National Trust Firearms Adviser) in 2017. Over a 5-month period the gun was dismantled, its components cleaned, conserved, notes made and a photographic record taken.

  • Bedding the Parker-Hale – It is perfectly possible to clean a muzzle loading Enfield type of rifle thoroughly without ever taking the barrel out of the wood.
  • Breech Plugs – The long range muzzle loading rifle is a specialty of its own and has components that are not found on any other type of muzzle loader. The most important of these is the breech plug.
